Basically newsjacking is about having a timely message or promotion that can capitalize on hot social trending topics. A great example of this is Thursday’s release of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie trailer. As a male I really have no interest in this movie and doubt that I will ever watch it, especially since the trailer reminded me of the Thomas Crown Affair (two versions starring Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan). Not sure what all the fuss is about, but back to the topic at hand… BBC Top Gear pulled off a clever newsjacking of their own by releasing their version of Top Gear’s Fifty Shades of Grey by putting together a collection of sexy sports cars all with grey paint jobs.
Just one day since their newsjack, this Top Gear page has already received 3,600 Facebook LIKES and 720 tweets.
Top Gear has illustrated that newsjacking is a great form of Guerrilla Marketing.
